India’s luxury landscape is about to change dramatically. Galeries Lafayette, the Parisian retail institution synonymous with fashion, beauty, and art de vivre, is set to open its first Indian flagship in Mumbai’s historic Kala Ghoda district. The debut — a collaboration with the Aditya Birla Group — signals a defining chapter in the evolution of India’s modern luxury market.
Located within the restored Turner Morrison and Voltas House buildings, the 90,000-sq.-ft., five-level flagship will blend Parisian refinement with Mumbai’s architectural heritage, bringing over 250 global designer brands under one roof. The space, envisioned by London-based design firm Virgile + Partners, reinterprets Galeries Lafayette’s timeless aesthetic through an Indian lens — uniting heritage, modernity, and cultural flair.
“Luxury in India today stands at the threshold of transformation,” said Kumar Mangalam Birla, Chairman of Aditya Birla Group. “A new India is emerging — youthful, ambitious, and globally connected. Together with Galeries Lafayette, we are creating an iconic destination in the heart of Mumbai that reflects this rising confidence.”
The launch stems from a 2022 partnership between Galeries Lafayette and Aditya Birla Fashion and Retail Limited (ABFRL), aiming to redefine India’s premium retail experience through both physical flagships and a robust omnichannel strategy.
For Nicolas Houzé, Executive Chairman of the Galeries Lafayette Group, the Mumbai flagship represents “a defining moment” in the Maison’s international journey. “Partnering with Aditya Birla Group gives this project a strong foundation,” he said. “This flagship will stand as a symbol of our ambition to make the French Art of Living shine on the global stage.”
To mark the occasion, the partners hosted a spectacular celebration on the Arabian Sea — a flotilla of yachts sailing from the Gateway of India to a private event that symbolized the brand’s ceremonial arrival in the country.
Beyond luxury retail, Galeries Lafayette Mumbai will introduce concierge services, private lounges, personal styling, and curated cultural programs, redefining experiential shopping for the region’s growing base of affluent consumers.
With India’s luxury market projected to reach USD 85 billion by 2030, the flagship is set to become a landmark of the nation’s evolving identity — where French heritage meets Indian aspiration.
